We successfully overcome barriers on the last mile of TB care in Madagascar.
TB in Madagascar
Despite being preventable and treatable with antibiotics, TB continues to be a major global health concern. The disease disproportionately affects communities in low-income countries.
In Madagascar, access to TB care, including diagnostics and treatment, remains limited despite support by international donors.
According to estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO), the 2020 TB incidence in Madagascar was 238 cases per 100,000 people, with only half of the patients with TB being notified and treated.
Accessible, good-quality TB care in Madagascar is overall hindered by a heavy lack of healthcare centers and trained health staff. Barriers to access particularly affect people in remote and hard-to-reach areas. In the rural South of the island, the vast majority of the population lives in extreme poverty and faces food insecurity. Poverty and malnutrition are both closely linked to the burden of TB as they make individuals more susceptible to become infected, limit access and adherence to TB care, and hinder treatment success.
Our Approach
We team up with existing healthcare facilities, community health workers and stakeholders to tackle service provision gaps and bottlenecks along the entire TB care cascade to ultimately reach communities in hard-to-access areas. By gaining a deeper understanding of influencing factors that contribute to the TB epidemic in Madagascar, our operational research informs the development of more effective and sustainable TB control and care strategies in Madagascar and beyond..
Impact
Our partnership initiative has been working since 2017 to tackle challenges in providing TB care services and supporting people with TB in successfully recovering from TB. We closely monitor and evaluate our actions to constantly improve our positive impact. Want to see some specific achievements from our actions? Feel invited to have a look at our impact numbers or browse the scientific publications from our operational research down below.
